Tell the most empowered version of your career story

You have a powerful opportunity to shape your future career chapter by making sure that you are telling yourself and others a generous version of your work story. If you skip this step and tell a tired ‘womp womp’ version of your career history, chances are you will continue down a womp womp path. Telling the brightest truth about your work story will set you up for the most expansive possibilities.

Questions addressed:

  • What does my work story sound like when I give myself permission to talk about myself like a caring friend or family member would?

  • What is a generous version of my work history that feels authentic?

Illuminating Case

Read past coaching client Audrey’s example to see just how differently you can present the same set of experiences based on the filter you put them through.

  • Write your “glass half full” career story — a narrative story of your work history that highlights compelling themes (like your values or motivations) and the positive qualities and wins you experienced along the way.

Be prepared to take a couple passes at it. You might write one draft and then review it and try to be on alert for the places where you are dismissing yourself or downplaying what you did in any way. Return to your list of past wins and use them as fuel to write and edit your story from a place of trust that you have a lot to offer.

It does not need to be longer than 1-2 pages.
